Avalanche protection gallery, Jaufen Pass / Passo Giovo Road, St. Leonhard in Passeier
Project description
This project pertains to an approx. 175-meter-long avalanche protection gallery. The segment of road to be protected by the new gallery was identified in an avalanche study. In order to ensure that the new structure had the firmest subgrade possible and could be founded on the valley-side of the embankment without the otherwise necessary backfill, the gallery was routed through the terrain in such a fashion as to ensure that the front edge of the structure more or less corresponded with the current edge of the road and did not project over it, as far as possible. For this reason – and also because of the significantly greater width (in comparison with the existent road), it was necessary to build the gallery in part into the mountain-side of the embankment. The upper edge of the trench was profiled so that the structure displayed a relatively slight but constant inclination in the direction of the valley so that avalanches could be diverted without a problem.
