"Kleiner Graben - Regensburgerallee" street space , Brixen / Bressanone
Project description
This street space was redesigned according to the "Shared Space" principle. In this principle, the goal is to harmonize such different functions as "connection," "access," and "lingering." As a consequence, it was possible to improve the pedestrian and bicycle traffic in the relevant area and to reduce the speed of motorized traffic. Now, motor vehicles in this area can be considered as "guests." The basic concept of the Baumallee was retained, but placed on a completely new footing. The street space was redesigned so that it could, if desired, be later repurposed as a 100% pedestrian zone. The goal of the project was to enhance the safety of all road users in the project area and to also enhance the quality for those who choose to linger in the street area. By leveling and smoothing the street and sidewalk pavement, pedestrians get the feeling that they have more space at their disposal. In installing the pavement, local porphyry and granite slabs were employed. A special plastic-based water-permeable mortar was used that assures levelness and durability.
