Florence Institute for the History of Art / Max Planck Society, Photo Collection at the Palazzo Grifoni Budini Gattai, Florence
Project description
Florence Institute for the History of Art is one of the oldest institutes for the study of art history and architectural history in Italy. The focus is on the study of their European, Mediterranean, and global importance. It was founded on the basis of a private initiative in 1897 and has been a part of the Max Planck Society since 2002. Scientists from all over the world can make use of the institute's resources, including the world's largest collection of photographs (with more than 620,000 photos).
The Palazzo Grifoni Budini Gattai was adapted to temporarily house the photo collection. All electrical installations (incl. energy distribution and data transmission lines) were installed in an especially designed double floor.
The workplaces are lit using desktop lamps. Special wallwashers at the shelves provide general illumination.
