German Embassy, Belgrade
Project description
The new building of the Chancellery of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany presents itself as a clear and calmly designed structure, which with its geometric lines takes over and continues the basic urbanistic attitude and harmony of the surroundings. The facades of light-colored, almost white natural stone (e.g. Beli Venčac), handcrafted in Serbia, represent an expressive connection between Serbia and its "White City" ("Beo Grad") and the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and thus its people, landscape and culture.
A special challenge to the design arose from the high safety requirements for the embassy building, both in terms of functionality and structural design. The increased protection requirements of the structure in terms of vandalism, earthquake resistance and explosion protection had to be taken into account in the planning.
The securing of the inner-city excavation pit and the foundation on a repeatedly softened, fine-grained soil (loess) proved to be a particular challenge.
