The "Klenzesteg" pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the Isar River, Munich
Project description
The place: The Klenzesteg is a bridge connecting two densely-built and populated parts of the city. It is situated in the heart of the city. Together with the St. Maximilian Cathedral, the German Museum, and the Müllerschen Swim Center, it forms a new component of Munich's cityscape. The route: The bridge spans the Isar River – which is quite wide at this point – in a broad curve and without touching the sensitive river or island path. The bridge route weaves its way in a gentle serpentine through the willow-covered island and gravel bank. This serpentine comes to a fork. A staircase forming the bridge's only pillar: It binds the bridge to the shore and meadow. A counter-curve represents the last bit of the trail over the shore meadow to the southeastern highwater dam, whose thick woods become sparser here. The gently curving path is framed by the balustrade supports rising on the inside curves.
